40 Years Strong! Celebrating Maesteg Sports Centre’s Legacy of Building Healthier Communities

When Maesteg Sports Centre opened its doors to the public back on 1st March 1983, the county’s attitude to health and fitness was very different. Very few people had thought of paying for a bottle of water, thousands still lit up cigarettes in public places and no one had ever heard of Zumba, Indoor Cycling or HIIT!  But times change and Halo Leisure Maesteg has been there every step of the way to get more local people, more active, more often,

“Since Maesteg Sports Centre officially opened its doors to the public 40 years ago this month, it has really made a difference when it comes to helping local people get fit and active,” said Karl Paterson, General Manager at Maesteg Sports Centre.

“The centre has registered an estimated 1,584,823 attendances and has delivered over 1,178.958 gym workouts since Halo Leisure took over the management of the centre in 2012.”

Maesteg Sports Centre celebrates its 40th anniversary with an investment of £400k from Bridgend County Borough Council, Sports Wales and Halo Leisure. This will improve the spaces for working out, winding down and community working. The upgrade includes a larger gym area with brand-new cardio machines, a dedicated strength and conditioning space, wellness zone, new exercise studio and training/workshop spaces. Improvements in the changing rooms include an accessible changing space.

Council Leader Huw David said: “It is fantastic to celebrate the 40th year of Maesteg Sports Centre and be reminded of how much it has to offer all ages.”

“This £400,000 investment is enhancing and expanding fitness facilities for the community and I look forward to seeing the completion of the next phase.”

Karl went on to say “We are thrilled to bring the vision of a modern leisure centre to life, thanks to the investment funding from Bridgend County Borough Council, Sport Wales, and Halo. The completion of phase one of the upgrade has already brought in a new array of equipment, larger gym and workout areas, and improved weight lifting section. Customers have already expressed positive feedback. As the upgrades continue, our goal is to encourage even more members of the local community to be more active more often.”
