Housebuilder helps to brighten up visits to health centre in Caldicot

A local housebuilder is helping to brighten up the experience of going to medical appointments for younger people in Caldicot.

Bellway Wales – which is building new homes at Greystone Meadows in Undy and Manor Chase in Tutshill – has donated £300 towards a rainbow mural in the children’s waiting area at Caldicot Health Centre in Cae Mawr Road.

Staff at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board were inspired to install the mural after seeing a call out from art company, Studio Response, for the public to send in their rainbow picture designs for the new Grange University Hospital near Cwmbran.

The health board then commissioned Studio Response to source an artist to create the mural, and appointed professional children’s book illustrator Becky Davies, who used to live in Chepstow and currently lives in Brighton.

The team at Bellway Wales offered to fund the mural, alongside Monmouthshire print company, Pomegranate Creative, who printed and installed the artwork.
Becky said:

“I was very flattered to have been asked to illustrate the mural for the children’s waiting area at Caldicot Health Centre. I am hoping that the artwork will bring joy and happiness to those working and visiting the centre and I am very excited to see it all finished.

“I would also like to thank the NHS staff and others working to keep everyone safe during these uncertain times.”

Lorraine Hicks, Primary Care Communications Assistant Head of Service at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said:

“Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is very grateful to Bellway for donating the money to enable us to commission local-born artist, Becky Davies.

“This beautiful artwork will brighten up the children’s waiting room, making it more child friendly and transforming it from a clinical environment to a more compassionate and inspirational one for all our patients and staff. We would like to thank everyone involved for bringing this project to life.”

Emma M Price, co-director of Studio Response, said:

“The bespoke wall artwork not only brightens the children’s waiting room, it also provides a fun and colourful area for the children to engage with and, we hope, to feel better about visiting the health centre.

“It is well documented that children sometimes find visiting hospitals and health centres a strange and stressful experience. Art in healthcare environments has proven to be an invaluable means for staff, parents or guardians to either distract or positively engage children.

“Bellway Wales, Studio Response and Pomegranate Creative’s kind donation has enabled Caldicot Health Centre to have its own site-specific artwork and allowed the health centre to spend its limited funds on new sofas and toys for the children’s waiting room instead.”

Sales Manager for Bellway Wales, Daniel Shone, said:

“When we heard about the health centre’s call for funding towards its art mural, we were very keen to help.

“As a local housebuilder, we aim to support good causes and help to bring the communities which surround our new homes together. We hope the mural will benefit the health centre and brighten the experience of visiting for children for years to come.”
