HMT Sancta Maria Hospital Sees Last Patients at Uplands Hospital Ahead of Move to SA1
HMT Sancta Maria Hospital is set to close its doors in Swansea’s Uplands for the last time this week ahead of the opening of a new state-of-the-art hospital in SA1. The last inpatient and outpatient appointments took place on Friday 15th January. Patients will be seen at the new hospital from the middle of February.
HMT Sancta Maria Hospital, which is owned and operated by not-for-profit organisation, the Healthcare Management Trust, has had a presence in Swansea since the 1950’s. It started as a six-bed private nursing hospital operated as a joint venture between two surgeons, Mr Tanner and Mr Cellen-Jones and the Ursulines of Jesus Sisters. Several expansions and improvements have taken place at the Uplands site since that time but the hospital will now move to new purpose-built premises to safeguard its future in Swansea and to continue to offer exemplary care to patients.
The new hospital, which is located on Lamberts Road in SA1, will open to patients on 15th February. The patient experience will be much improved due to a range of new features including on-site parking, improved accessibility, en-suite bedrooms and a dedicated day surgery unit. There will also be an on-site MRI machine which, alongside a digital X-ray, will greatly improve the hospital’s diagnostic offering.
Andrew Keen, who was one of the last patients to be seen in the Uplands, comments: “I have visited Sancta Maria a number of times over the years and have always had a good experience. It will be interesting to see the difference between this hospital and the new hospital in SA1 and I’m looking forward to my follow-up at the new site. I hadn’t been aware that I was going to be the last patient today but I’m happy to be a part of the hospital’s history and wish everyone luck with the move in the coming weeks.”
Geoff Bailey, Hospital Director at HMT Sancta Maria Hospital comments: “The opening of the new hospital has been years in the planning and we are getting ever closer to welcoming patients to our brand new facility. Today marks an important milestone as we stop seeing patients in Uplands and begin the task of moving to the new site. We have a rich history of providing the best quality medical care from this building and we are confident that our new site will see us improve on this in the future, while retaining the spirit and ethos of our team.”
During this interim period, patients can still contact the hospital in the usual ways via calling 01792 479040 or by emailing info@hmtsanctamaria.org.
