People who drive taxis and private hire vehicles in Bridgend County Borough are being offered free PPE equipment to help keep them safe against the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Part of a Welsh Government initiative which recognises the important contribution that taxi and PHV drivers make to public transport within communities all across Wales, the scheme provides licensed drivers with a free PPE pack featuring six months’ worth of cleaning and hygiene products, the vast majority of which have been sourced from Welsh businesses.

The packs, which are worth more than £73 each, including free postage and are designed to ensure that vehicles are as safe as possible to use for both drivers and passengers while aligning taxis and private hire vehicles with measures that have already been introduced on other modes of public transport.

Cllr Dhanisha Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Future Generations, said: “Drivers who take advantage of this free initiative will receive a pack containing five litres of all-purpose sanitiser, a trigger bottle, six 500ml foam hand sanitisers, 100 folded cloths, two medical-grade washable face masks, a box of 50 disposable face coverings, and almost 500 detox wipes.

“It is well worth the short amount of time required to register, and I hope that taxi and private hire drivers will take advantage of it.”
