Llanishen High take on Patagonian journey for local hospice charity
A 300-strong team from Llanishen High School is travelling to Patagonia virtually as part of City Hospice’s 100 Heroes challenge.
Staff, pupils, parents and former students of Llanishen High School have come together to travel the equivalent of the distance to Patagonia, a region in Argentina where over 50,000 people speak the Welsh language and experience Welsh culture, by the end of March.
Participants are encouraged to run, walk, cycle, skate and scoot their way to the joint target of 12,000km while raising money for local charity City Hospice. The challenge has already exceeded expectations, raising over £1500 in the first week.
The only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in the capital, the charity provides care to 550 patients at any one time.
Harry Trelawney, Head of PE at Llanishen High School, said: “It’s incredible that so many teachers, staff, pupils and ex-pupils have taken on this challenge so willingly. It’s fantastic to get everyone out doing some exercise, whether it’s walking 10,000 steps or running 10k. Everyone’s collective effort is helping us to get to Patagonia by the end of March!
“City Hospice is close to our heart, providing love and care for many members of our community and we are delighted to be raising money to support the charity. At Llanishen High School, we are putting our ‘heart and sole’ into the 100 Heroes Challenge.”
Daisy Magill, Fundraising Officer at City Hospice, said: “It’s brilliant to see over 300 people, made up from teachers, past and present students and their families, support City Hospice. Everyone looks like they are having an amazing time completing the challenge and we enjoy being with Llanishen High every step of the way.
“This support will help us to continue to provide specialist palliative care and support to patients and their families living with cancer and other life limiting conditions in Cardiff.”
