The best horse races and greyhound races to look forward to in October
When it comes to racing, there is always an event on the horizon to look forward to, but some months bring more exciting action than others. It’s fair to say that October fits that billing in the greyhound racing and horse racing worlds, and we’re blessed to have so many intriguing races to look forward to in the coming weeks.
As you read the greyhound tips and study the horse racing form guides, we’ve put together a list of five October events from the world of racing that you simply don’t want to miss.
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (horse racing)
There are few races more lucrative on the horse racing calendar than the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with a mouth-watering prize pot of €5 million. The event takes place at Longchamp, Paris on October 3rd, and will see plenty of horse racing’s top thoroughbreds go head-to-head for victory.
Early favourites include Tarnawa, Adayar, Snowfall and Hurricane Lane, whilst the likes of St Mark’s Basilica, Mishriff and Chrono Genesis can’t be discounted either despite their slightly longer odds.
Champion Stakes (greyhound racing)
Turning to greyhounds, and the Champion Stakes will provide plenty of entertainment for fans of the sport on October 22nd. Formerly held at the iconic Wimbledon tracks, the Champion Stakes boasts plenty of history, having first been run in 1947. The current venue is Romford, which has an historic relationship with greyhound racing.
As with all these historic races, the top trainers will be hoping to land a winner in the Champion Stakes, and it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out. It’ll take a strong performance to come out on top, and with a quality field set to battle it out, we should see some real drama.
British Champions Day (horse racing)
The traditional finale to horse racing’s flat season, British Champions Day at Ascot is one of the highlights of the racing calendar. The meeting brings a bumper prize pot of around £4 million, making it the most lucrative fixture in British racing.
There are four Group 1 races among the six events held on the day, and the highlight of the afternoon is the Champion Stakes, which boasts prize money of around £1.3 million. Early favourites to win the Champion Stakes include Mishriff, St Mark’s Basilica, Snowfall and Addeybb, and with those big names present there’s likely to be no shortage of entertainment.
English Oaks (greyhound racing)
Back to greyhound racing, and the English Oaks is another hugely attractive fixture. Set to take place in Birmingham for the first time this year due to redevelopments taking place at its usual home of Swindon, the English Oaks will see lots of the most talented bitches and their respective trainers battling it out for victory.
There is an enticing £15,000 on offer for the winner, and it will be interesting to see who can adapt to the new surroundings and emerge triumphant in this great exhibition of greyhound racing.
