‘Dirty Vegan’ Pritchard cooks up a storm with Laleston Chefs to celebrate World Vegan Day

Well known Bridgend TV star and ‘Dirty Vegan’ chef Mathew Pritchard was on hand to help the team of chefs prepare food for a packed restaurant full of enthusiastic diners as the Great House Restaurant launched their new Vegan Afternoon Tea menu on World Vegan Day this Monday.

Fine Wines Direct offered a variety of Vegan wines for tasting

Diners also enjoyed a selection of vegan mocktails and cocktails, as well as sampling a selection of the restaurant’s vegan wines from Fine Wines Direct and a new delicious Indian style lager, fully produced in Wales, called Roar Beer, which is also vegan and will be exclusively available in hand selected restaurants, including the Great House Hotel after it’s launch later this month.

With a mix of vegan, vegetarian and carnivores attending, the team, headed up by Head Chef Matthew Howells, had their work cut out to please everyone with a vegan menu, but the wide variety of dishes on offer, both savoury and sweet, did the job perfectly, although the absolute favourite of the night was definitely the vegan scones with home made raspberry violet gin jam and whipped oat fraiche.  Both the scones and the fraiche tasted much lighter than the traditional variety, and proved very popular with carnivores and vegans alike.

Owners Elinor and Sanj have owned The Great House since 2017 and the restaurant already has a reputation for excellent food and friendly service.  They were surprised and delighted to see the event so well supported (tickets sold out well in advance of the event.}

Elinor explained:

“Our chefs are always striving to adapt and create new menus – with people being more conscious about what they are eating and looking for a more plant based diet we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce a new afternoon tea menu that could be enjoyed by everyone.
“We’ve always been a fan of Pritchard and followed his dirty vegan venture so we thought it would be the perfect collaboration.  It’s gone really well tonight, and we’ve had lovely compliments about the food and our team.”
The scones, whipped oat fraiche and home made jam seemed to be everyone’s favourite!
Pritchard was surprised to see how many carnivores had come along and been willing to experience vegan food.  While not all said they would consider becoming vegan, many said they would definitely be open to eating vegan food again. Pritchard explained:
“Being vegan was really hard years ago, but it’s much easier now, most restaurants now cater for vegans, it’s healthy food and tastes great.  I’m pleased everyone enjoyed tonight.  Hopefully we’ve opened some minds up to trying new foods while having a great night.”

The event proved a huge success for the team.  Owner Elinor said:

As well as offering beer to taste, guests were given a ‘Goody Bag’ containing Roar Beer’s new Indian style lager to enjoy at home!

“We want to say thank you to everyone who attended our Vegan Afternoon Tea Launch Party – and we hope you all enjoyed helping us celebrate National Vegan Day.  We also want to say thank you to Matt for this collaboration and all his hard work alongside our kitchen and front of house teams.”

“The good news is that for those who missed the launch… the vegan afternoon tea is here to stay! For all enquiries or to make a booking call  01656 657644″
