Local Cardiff charity, City Hospice, are holding their annual Light Up A Life Remembrance Service to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones.

The free service will be held on December 2 in the grounds of the Cardiff Hospice and will feature a variety of Christmas songs and carols from schools and local choirs before the Christmas tree lights are switched on. City Hospice’s celebrity ambassador Sian Lloyd will host the evening.

This year’s Light Up A Life campaign, which runs until December 31, also sees the return of City Hospice’s popular digital feature, a ‘Virtual Star in the Sky’.

The innovative idea was introduced last year as a safe way for supporters to take part in Light Up A Life during the winter months amid restrictions due to the pandemic. The ‘Virtual Star in the Sky’ allows people to make a donation and leave a message of remembrance on a virtual star in the Cardiff skyline in memory of their loved ones.

City Hospice also have other fundraising efforts to support the campaign in the lead up to Christmas. The sold-out service will be available to view online on the City Hospice website on Sunday December 12 at 6pm.

The funds raised will help City Hospice provide nursing and essential care for its patients, in addition to bereavement support and counselling services for families.

As Cardiff’s local hospice, the charity provides home-based specialist palliative care to patients throughout the capital who are living with life limiting and terminal illness such as cancer, dementia, motor neurone disease (MND) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Liz Andrews, Chief Executive, City Hospice, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back for a live Light Up A Life Remembrance Service after the pandemic forced us online last year. Christmas can be a hard time for those who have lost a family member, close friend or colleague, and we hope our service will help people remember their loved ones as the festive season begins.”

Sian Lloyd, City Hospice’s Celebrity Ambassador, said: “I feel privileged to be hosting our Service of Remembrance. The festive season can be such a difficult time of year and I hope it will allow people to find some comfort as we join together to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones who are unable to be with us this Christmas.”
