Could Ramsey still be an ace in Rangers’ pack?

For Aaron Ramsey, 2022 was always going to be a big year. The Wales international found himself approaching an important career crossroads in January that promised to either make or break what was to follow.

With a move to Serie A giants Juventus not playing out entirely as planned, a move in the winter transfer window had the potential to propel the classy midfielder back towards bigger and better things.

In some ways, the decision to swap Turin for Glasgow came as something of a surprise, with the former Arsenal man opting to head for Scotland rather than retrace professional steps to the Premier League. It has not always been smooth sailing for Ramsey at Ibrox, but he may yet walk away with another major trophy.

Rangers have defied the odds to reach the Europa League final in 2022, with football betting tips eager to point out that they should not be written off against Eintracht Frankfurt despite being priced at 6/5 for a stunning continental triumph.

Having made it all the way to a showpiece event in Sevilla, the Gers – along with a loyal legion of followers – have no intention of heading home with silver medals. Having endured that fate once before back in 2008, the plan is to savour a historic win on Spanish soil.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst certainly has enough quality at his disposal to turn dreams into reality, with Ramsey very much part of those plans.

Springboard

A man who has continued to star for his country when struggling for regular starts at Juve has plenty of big fish to fry over the remainder of the calendar year. For him, there are various targets to hit before 2023 is welcomed in.

The most notable of those relates to the World Cup finals in Qatar, with Wales counting down the days to a play-off final encounter with either Scotland or Ukraine in June. Prevail there and Ramsey will be gracing the grandest stage in sport.

It may be that he is turning out for a different domestic employer by then, with an Italian parent club expected to cash in over the summer on a player who will have less than 12 months left to run on his contract at the Allianz Stadium when returning to Italy.

Interest in his signature should remain high, even if there is no deal to be done at Rangers. They may, however, be tempted into asking questions of his availability were a starring role to be played in pursuit of European honours.

Ramsey has already helped to secure two notable scalps, in victories over Borussia Dortmund and Braga, and saw 10 wins collected from his opening 11 appearances in all competitions – with the only blot on that copybook seeing him find the target in an Old Firm derby date with Celtic.

There is no doubting that the ability is still there and, ahead of attention turning towards another transfer window and FIFA’s flagship event in the Middle East, there is every chance that Ramsey could end up being an ace in Rangers’ pack.
