Celebrity farmer hails the GWCT Welsh Game Fair’s vital education role
Celebrity Welsh farmer Gareth Wyn Jones says the first GWCT Welsh Game Fair will provide a “fantastic” platform to educate people about where food comes from and the country way of life.
Gareth, a bilingual TV presenter and social media influencer, is supporting the GWCT Welsh Game Fair – https://www.welshgamefair.org/ – which will be held at the famous Vaynol Estate, near Bangor from September 9-11.
The three-day event is organised by Stable Events in partnership with The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT). Stable Events also organises The Game Fair at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire and The Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace, Perthshire.
Gareth is campaigning to educate people, particularly those that live in urban areas, about where their meat and vegetables originate and how farming supports rural communities.
“The GWCT Welsh Game Fair will be an amazing opportunity to connect people with farming, food and the country way of life,” said Gareth. “People are so far removed from where their food comes from, how it’s produced and how it’s cooked.
“There is such a divide. Every single day on social media I get asked lots of questions (about where food comes from) and we must address this issue. We can’t keep burying our heads in the sand.
“Going forward, events like this will bring people together and education is key. However we put it across, we give them an educated choice. They see how their food is produced and they get an understanding of local, seasonality and the cost.
“Cheaper food comes at a cost to the environment, the farmer and sometimes to the animal. We have got to address that. We need to keep a balance and make sure that we all have food on our plates.
“It’s all about education and having an open discussion. I believe the GWCT Welsh Game Fair can help to reconnect people and celebrate the vast array of fantastic Welsh produce.
“As a shooter and farmer, I am so excited that The Game Fair is coming to North Wales. Let’s all join together and bring as many people as we can through the gates of the Vaynol Estate and showcase what we have here in the countryside and be proud of it.”
Money raised at the GWCT Welsh Game Fair will support the GWCT’s charitable work and give a welcome boost to the region, with tourism and visitors contributing to the local economy.
Fishing, clay shooting, gundogs, game cookery, falconry, horses and hounds, as well as rural crafts, food and drink will feature at the event, which is expected to attract people passionate about the countryside, country pursuits and conservation. There are also have-a-go activities on offer for all of the family to try their hand and a variety of country pursuits.
Leading Welsh celebrity chef and author Bryn Williams, a farmer’s son from Denbigh, will be creating a bespoke menu for guests in a VIP Enclosure Restaurant, aptly named The White Park Restaurant after the famous Vaynol Cattle, and taking part in live, open-air cooking demonstrations throughout the weekend. VIP Enclosure and Restaurant are sponsored by Clogau, the iconic Welsh jewellery brand.
Visitors can look forward to a wide range of attractions, displays, live debates, shopping at hundreds of trade stands and family entertainment, all with a countryside theme.
The event will be a fantastic shop window for the Welsh countryside and will promote the unique culture and heritage of Wales. It will also bring together representatives from a range of conservation, farming, field sports and fishing bodies for debates on Welsh rural issues.
The aim is to foster greater communication and co-operation between sectors and promote the benefits of country pursuits and conservation to a wider audience.
