Bellway Wales raises almost £10,000 for Cancer Research UK at charity golf day

Almost £10,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK by Bellway Wales staff and suppliers at its annual charity golf day – which has been renamed in honour of a much-loved colleague who died from cancer earlier this year.

A total of 21 teams took part in the inaugural Hugh Thomas Memorial Golf Day at Whitchurch Golf Club in Cardiff.

Two trophies were donated for the event by timber supplier Mon Timber. One was for the winners to take home and the other will be engraved each year with the name of the winning team and displayed at the Bellway Wales divisional office in Cardiff.

The first ever winners of the Hugh Thomas Memorial Trophy were a team from civil engineering company Galtec.

The teams took part in a variety of challenges including beat the pro, longest drive, nearest-to-the-pin and straightest drive.

Through entry fees, challenges, a raffle and an auction, the day raised £5,845.25 for Cancer Research UK, Bellway’s nominated national charity. This total was then boosted to £9,875.75 by match-funding from Bellway group. Prizes donated for the cause included tickets for the Wales v Australia autumn rugby international in November, Lanson Champagne, and vouchers for the Whitchurch Golf Club shop.

The day began at the club on Pantmawr Road, Whitchurch, as teams were served a bacon roll breakfast before the start of play. It ended in late afternoon with a curry buffet and presentations to the winners.

Bellway’s Cancer Research UK representative Sophie Busson attended the event and spoke to the competitors about the vital research the charity does and how important the funds they raised are to its work.

Daniel Shone, Sales Manager for Bellway Wales, said: “Raising this money means so much more to us because it has been done in honour of our colleague Hugh Thomas.

“Now that we have launched the event as The Hugh Thomas Memorial Golf Day, I look forward to seeing many team names fill up that trophy in the years to come. Each time it is handed over it will mean Cancer Research UK has gained even more funds for its work, which we all know is crucial to beating this disease.

“I’d like to thank everyone who donated prizes and of course Whitchurch Golf Club for hosting the day and providing a great location for the tournament, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.”

Bellway is aiming to raise £3 million for Cancer Research UK by 2023 as part of its 3 for 23 campaign.
