Call to enjoy Swansea’s ‘wonderful wildflowers’ at special event
People across Swansea are being invited to an event spotting a range of “wonderful wildflowers” and insects to add to a national database.
The Environment Centre and Swansea Community Farm are calling on flower fanatics to join their Wildflower Survey event on September 22nd at Cadle Heath.
Visitors to the event, from 11.30am to 1.30pm, will get the chance to hunt for insects in the natural habitat of Cadle Heath, they will also get the opportunity to spot wildflowers and learn more about these beautiful blooms.
Other activities will include carrying out sweep netting of insects from long grass, and taking part in a pollinator survey using a tick sheet to check what species can be found on the Heath.
The information will then be uploaded to the Aderyn database, which helps collate biodiversity information and supports wildlife recorders and environmental professionals across Wales.
The event is being run by Swansea-based charities the Environment Centre and Swansea Community Farm as part of social housing and care provider Pobl Group’s Penderi Green Regeneration Project.
Matt White at the Environment Centre said: “We recognise that we are particularly lucky here in Penderi with the amazing wildlife and flowers that grow right on our doorstep.
“A number of people enjoy walking in the area but not many know a great deal about the diverse insects and plants that live here.
“We thought people might enjoy finding out more about this unique habitat and the wonderful wildflowers that grow here. We hope this event will encourage more people to explore this fantastic area.
“This is set to be a really relaxed, fun, and informative event, so please come along and enjoy!”
Kate McCabe, Community Development Facilitator for Pobl, also encouraged people to come along and learn more about Penderi’s green spaces.
She said: “Events like this are so important as they help people to connect with their local green spaces and help to protect them for everyone to enjoy.
“Knowing more about the species that live on our doorstep means we can protect them for generations to come.
“We’d urge everyone to pop along and find out something new about Cadle Heath.”
Pobl is able to deliver the Penderi Green Regeneration Project with the help of key partners, Swansea Environment Centre, Room To Grow, Swansea Community Farm and the Nature Conservation Team at Swansea Council, with funding by UK Government under the Community Renewal Fund (CRF).
