Dementia Support Service

Five organisations from across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot have formed a new and unique partnership to transform the support available for local people with dementia, and their carers.

The ‘Dementia Support Service’ has been created by Age Cymru West Glamorgan, Citizens Advice Swansea Neath Port Talbot, Swansea Carers Centre, Neath Port Talbot Carers Service, and Care and Repair Western Bay, to help people navigate a dementia diagnosis for themselves, or their loved ones, with person-centred support and information.

The catch-all service – www.dementiasupportservice.org.uk – will provide free advice and guidance, at home respite for carers, specialist dementia training for carers, and practical help around the home – including housing adaptations and repairs. It aims to create a seamless referral between an NHS diagnosis, and additional support not provided or subsidised by health and social services, as well as providing support to those already living with dementia.

Around 42,000 people across Wales have dementia, with numbers predicted to rise year-on-year.

Connor James, spokesperson for the Dementia Support Service, said: “We’re very proud to be working together with key local organisations to improve the lives of those with dementia, and their loved ones, with the provision of vital services at no cost to them.

“With the correct support, people with dementia can maintain their independence and continue to thrive, living enriching and active lives. Carers can also benefit from specialist support and guidance to help them take care of their loved one and look after their own wellbeing.

“This partnership is a unique approach, and we are grateful to our fellow partners in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot for the collaborative way in which they have all come together to help as many people as we can in the area.”
