Award-winning builder’s mission is to build quality homes for local people
A desire to provide beautiful, affordable homes for local people in hand-picked locations prompted the launch of Montgomeryshire Homes Ltd in 2014.
House sales have rocketed in the last year for the company, which is based in Welshpool and seeking to add its workforce. The company is selling 23 houses this year and a new development of 23 homes has begun in Castle Caereinion.
The success story was recognised at the Powys Business Awards 2022 when Montgomeryshire Homes Ltd won the Small Business Award, sponsored by WR Partners.
Showcasing the diverse range of successful enterprises in the county, the annual awards are organised by Mid Wales Manufacturing Group (MWMG) with support from sponsors. This year’s awards ceremony was held at Dering Lines, Brecon.
Run by Richard Glover-Davies with support from his brother Haydn, Montgomeryshire Homes specialises in developing building plots in villages that are of no interest to national builders.
The company continues to buy land for future development on the edge of villages and all houses built are energy efficient, with local people given first chance to buy homes to stay in their community.
“As a company we will only ever build in our local area, as it’s where we were brought up,” explained Richard. “So many of our friends have had to move away to be able to buy a house. We want to give people the chance to stay.
“We have a clear vision of where we want to be in five years’ time, with a target to build in excess of 50 houses a year.”
Montgomeryshire Homes, which reinvests profit, employs its own tradesmen and is looking to recruit more to ensure that houses are built faster and to a high quality standard. Costs are reduced by owning its own plant machinery and arranging in-house staff training wherever possible.
Supported by sister company, gloversure, Montgomeryshire Homes has recently launched an online portal and app that makes the house buying process much smoother for everyone. Almost all the company’s houses have been sold through social media marketing or via its website, thereby saving costs.
After receiving the award, Richard said: “There is nothing better than handing over the keys to a house to first buyers. On the most recent site we have developed, all the smaller homes have gone to first time buyers within eight miles. We are building quality local houses for local people.”
Powys Business Awards judges said: “This company has seen very strong growth from its conception and benefits from strong leadership from Richard, supported by Haydn, who bring complimentary skills to the business.
“Richard has developed an innovative app to streamline the sales process and is passionate about providing quality homes for the region which they offer to local people in the first instance.”
