Neath Port Talbot Council is progressing with its plans to tackle essential access/transport concerns, which if not undertaken could have major impacts on the residents of Abercregan and Glyncorrwg.

We are pleased to confirm that the Welsh Government has now announced its Roads Review and while a number of road projects have been axed, the Cymmer Carriageway Improvements project has been listed as a “Local Authority Scheme”.

This means it can qualify for future Welsh Government transport grant funding subject to meeting new criteria in Wales for road building and the Welsh Government’s commitments under the Well-being of Future Generations Act.

In the meantime however, resurfacing of the hill and main access points on Avon Street, Maesteg Road and Station Road, Cymmer, must be carried out to improve driver safety and make the area ready for the Cymmer Carriageway Improvements project providing funding is approved.

It is proposed the resurfacing work in Cymmer will be carried out on the following dates:

Sunday 26th February 2023 – Daytime Working

Maesteg Road, access lane to Fire Station and Avon Street – with associated road closure/temporary traffic signals and an alternative route via Avon Street and then Craig Y Fan Terrace.

Monday 27th February 2023 – Daytime Working 9am to 3pm

Avon Street – with road closure/temporary traffic signals and alternative route via Craig Y Fan Terrace.

Thursday 2nd March 2023 – Daytime Working 9am to 3pm

Avon Street with road closure/temporary traffic lights – alternative route via Craig Y Fan Terrace.

Sunday 5th March 2023 – Night-time Working 6pm to 12 midnight

Maesteg Road – Involving road closure with no official alternative route.

We understand there may be inconvenience on these days and ask residents to make appropriate arrangements and to be patient as the works will have a short term impact for major improvement.

Cllr Scott Jones, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said: “I’m delighted we have been given Local Authority Scheme status for the vital Cymmer Carriageway Improvements project.

“We now plan to proceed with essential resurfacing work which will ensure the critical road route linking the communities of Abercregan and Glyncorrwg with Cymmer and the rest of the county borough remains safe and serviceable.

“In the meantime, further detailed design and other work will carried out by the council on the preparation of the much needed Cymmer Carriageway Improvements scheme. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works but they are essential to ensure vital local transport links.”
