Swansea opticians raises £500 for international development organisation

An opticians in Swansea has raised money for Play Action International, a charity that provides safe and fun play facilities for disadvantaged children in Uganda.

Specsavers in the Kingsway decided to raise some much-needed funds for the charity after local resident, Abby Sly, got in touch with the store and asked if they could hold a fundraiser.

In response, the team at the store hosted a bake sale and raffle, raising £250 – which was matched by the store’s directors to make a total of £500.

Ms Sly, an 18-year-old who studies at Swansea University, will be going to Uganda for two weeks in July to help build a playground for disadvantaged children.

She says: ‘This year, Play Action International has focused particularly on projects in Uganda and Kenya. I took this opportunity because I want to have a positive impact on the lives of underprivileged communities, in this case building a playground in Jinja, Uganda.

‘The hope is that children can be stimulated at school and to improve their educational programmes for a higher chance of success in their future.

‘I’d like to give a massive thank you to the team at Specsavers for raising £500 and supporting such a worthy cause, it really does mean so much and it will go a long way.’

Chris Jones, retail director at Specsavers Swansea, adds: ‘We’re really passionate about supporting charities that are doing such vital work for those in need. It was a privilege to host this fundraiser and we’re thrilled that we were able to raise the money for Abby – we hope it will make a real difference and we wish her all the best in Uganda.’
