With your favourite decorations, a few winter candles and some jolly Christmas music, making the inside of your home feel festive is easy. However, it can be a little trickier getting the outside of your home to be just as much in the Christmas spirit.

Keep reading for some great tips on how you can embellish the exterior of your home to create a warm and welcoming entrance that’s just as festive as the inside.

Give it a tidy

The first step in any garden makeover is to clear any debris. Old or dead plants certainly don’t shout festive spirit and removing any loose leaves will also prevent slugs and snails from setting up home.

To inject some welcome winter colour, why not plant a rose hedge in your front garden? The cool winter tones will pop off if you’re ever lucky enough to get some snow this Christmas!

Light it up

Festive lights can give that welcoming ambient glow that’ll make all visitors stop and stare before knocking. However, before you start installing your outdoor Christmas lights, make sure you have a clear plan of where you want them to go. It’s a lot harder to make these decisions when you’re halfway up your ladder…

Add a wreath

Did you know that wreaths have been around since the 16th century? This circular shape represents eternity; which is how Christmas with difficult family members sometimes feels. Wreaths are beautiful icons of Christmastime, and by adding a wreath to your front door, you can get that classic exterior Christmas look.

There are lots of different wreath designs to choose from, or you could even bond as a family unit by creating a unique wreath yourself!

Create a grotto

For families with young children, creating a small grotto scene out front is a great way to get everyone into the festive spirit. Adding this small structure also gives you a great spot to protect yourself from any rainy winter weather, and still enjoy the outside Christmas scene you’ve created.

No grotto is complete without an inflatable Santa and reindeer pawprints in the fake snow… and if you’ve got someone with a touch of the dramatics, an adult Santa costume also won’t go amiss!

Giving the outside of your home a festive makeover is just as important as decorating the inside. By giving the space a tidy, adding some lights and creating a winter grotto, you can create a warm and welcoming entrance that will not only get visiting family and friends into the Christmas spirit but will also help spread festive cheer around the rest of the neighbourhood.

Not even the local Scrooge could turn their nose up at your efforts!
