Emily Thomas, who studies MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David was proud to represent Wales last weekend at the Loughborough International Athletics (LIA) event, competing in the Long Jump.

The competition took place on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Loughborough University’s Paula Radcliffe Stadium and marked the start of the outdoor athletics season.  The event featured teams from England, Wales, Scotland, GB & NI Under 20s, the National Athletics League, and Loughborough University.

Welsh Athletics commented on the significance of the event:

“This competition provides a key opportunity for many of our athletes, as they look to build towards the summer’s Championships.”

Emily, who trains and coaches at Cardiff Archers, had a strong performance, finishing 8th with a jump of 5.53 meters. She shared her excitement about the opportunity:

“It was my first senior Welsh selection so I’m thankful to Welsh Athletics for the opportunity. The atmosphere at Loughborough International was amazing, it was no better way to open my outdoor season than there. I had a great training camp over Easter with my group and coach (Phil Warwicker) from Cardiff Archers, so am looking forward to seeing what I can do the rest of this season.

“I’m proud to be a part of UWTSD and to represent both the Uni and Wales at this event. The support and encouragement from the University is unmatched and I’m excited for the rest of my summer season.”

Sharon Leech, Head of Individual Sport at UWTSD Academy of Sport said:

“ We are extremely proud to have one of our students donning the Welsh vest at this prestigious event.  Representing your country is a huge honour and on behalf of the Academy I’d like to congratulate Emily on her selection.

“Emily was recently a recipient of the UWTSD Academy of Sport ‘Individual Sport Athlete of the Year’ award, following her excellent performance at the BUCS Indoor Athletics and also at the Welsh Athletics Indoor Championships. Being based at Cardiff, Emily does all her training up there with her coach Phil, however Emily was proud to wear the UWTSD vest when competing at the BUCS.”

Lee Tregoning Head of the UWTSD Academy of Sport added:

“ The UWTSD Academy of Sport is super proud of all that Emily has achieved this year and wish her the best of luck for this coming summer season. I’d like to also thank Sharon for all the support she has given all our individual student athletes this year too.”
