Who needs health and safety training?

There is no workplace that would not benefit from having a qualified first aider in the workplace – it means employers can ensure the safety and well-being of employees and visitors – workplace accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time, and having a trained first aider on-site allows for immediate response, which can significantly reduce the severity of injuries and can save lives should a medical emergency occur.  However, it can also be a legal requirement depending on your business.

In the UK, the law governing first aid in the workplace is primarily outlined in the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. These regulations require employers to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure that employees receive immediate assistance if they are injured or become ill at work.

Here’s a summary of the key requirements:

1. Risk Assessment

• Employers must conduct a first aid needs assessment to determine the level of first aid provision required. This assessment should consider factors such as the nature of the work, workplace hazards, the number of employees, the size and layout of the premises, and the location of the workplace relative to emergency medical services.

2. First Aid Kits

• The workplace must have a sufficient number of well-stocked first aid kits that are easily accessible to all employees. The contents of the first aid kits should reflect the outcomes of the risk assessment and be appropriate for the types of injuries that could occur.

3. Appointed Person

• In low-risk workplaces, it may be sufficient to have an “appointed person” who is responsible for first aid arrangements. This person does not need formal first aid training but is responsible for maintaining the first aid kits and calling emergency services if necessary.

4. Trained First Aiders

• In higher-risk workplaces, employers are required to have trained first aiders on-site. The number of first aiders and the level of training required should be determined by the risk assessment. First aiders must complete an approved training course, such as the “First Aid at Work” (FAW) course, and hold a valid certificate.

5. First Aid Room

• A first aid room should be provided in workplaces where the assessment identifies it as necessary, typically in larger or higher-risk environments. The room should be easily accessible, properly equipped, and managed by a qualified first aider.

6. Information for Employees

• Employers must inform their employees about the first aid arrangements, including the location of first aid kits, the identity and location of first aiders or appointed persons, and how to contact them.

7. Legal Compliance

• Employers are legally obligated to comply with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), including fines and other penalties.

Employers should regularly review their first aid needs and ensure that they are meeting all legal requirements. The specific needs will vary depending on the workplace, so the assessment should be thorough and regularly updated to reflect any changes in the workplace environment or workforce.

A first aider provides not only immediate care but also peace of mind for everyone in the workplace, knowing that help is readily available in case of an emergency.

3 Day First aid at work course

Date – 16/17/18th September 2024 
Cost – £175 + VAT per person.

Upon successful completion of this highly interactive course, candidates will receive a certificate valid for 3 years along with a glossy reference manual.
