Following an Estyn inspection earlier in the year, Ffaldau Primary School in the Garw Valley has been praised by inspectors for a number of strengths, not least for its caring ethos which is pivotal to all that the school does.

Inspectors highlighted the school’s high expectations and clear guidelines, encouraging positive behaviour from the pupils; the teachers’ effective questioning techniques to glean an insight into pupils’ understanding, as well as the positive impact of staff feedback on learners’ progress.

In the report, curriculum development is noted as a priority for school leaders, who have ensured that pupils’ learning is purposeful and reflects the context of the Pontycymer community.

Provided with a rich curriculum offering an array of valuable opportunities to learn about Wales and the local community, pupils are involved with many local projects, including their new allotment plot, local businesses, and the heritage society to learn about the past of the valley.

Additional learning needs (ALN) provision at the school is also spotlighted in the Estyn report as being valued by parents since it offers effective support to those learners with identified needs.

Louise Taylor, Head of School at Ffaldau Primary School, said: “We are incredibly proud of our recent Estyn inspection, which highlights the hard work and commitment shown by our staff and pupils.

“We are pleased that Estyn has recognised the work which is carried out to support all pupils’ wellbeing and acknowledged that we are a caring school with high expectations, who focus on the needs of our pupils. This allows our pupils to build confidence, develop their skills and thrive as individuals throughout their time at Ffaldau.

“I would like to thank our staff for their hard work, dedication and passion in ensuring the best for our pupils and thank our families and wider community for their continued support.”

Cllr Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “Ffaldau Primary is a very special school, with hard working pupils and dedicated staff.  It is wonderful to see that Estyn has identified and acknowledged this.

“It is particularly pleasing to see that the report highlights the school as inclusive and caring, ensuring that any economic disadvantage is not a barrier to any pupil fulfilling their potential.

“I would like to congratulate everyone connected to the school for this fantastic recognition of their hard work. Gwaith da, bawb!”
