Earlier this year, pupils from Newton Primary School, Porthcawl, penned their own original song and headed to London to represent Wales and perform in the finals of ‘The School Song Competition 2024’, having been shortlisted from over one thousand entries.

The first songwriting competition of its kind, featuring schools from across the UK, its aim was to boost the self-esteem, creativity, and imagination of young people through music and song.

The competition was delivered by ‘The School Vision’, an organisation offering the opportunity for young people to create music and words through song or poetry, with all proceeds from the event donated to ‘The Grief Encounter’ – a registered charity supporting children and young people following the death of someone close.

‘Back to the Sixties’ is the upbeat, cheerful song that carried the talented group of pupils to London.  Teacher and lead for the project, Henley Jenkins, said: “It was a brilliant day and the children gave absolutely everything, but just finished outside the top three. The standard of talent was incredibly high and the winning school gave an amazing performance.

“The atmosphere in the event was very supportive, encouraging, and appreciative. We are so grateful for the opportunity to participate and are already planning next year’s entry!”

This enthusiasm is echoed by the sentiments of the pupils.  Ottilie, a Year 6 pupil from the school, said: “I love how everyone in our group encouraged each other.  I also enjoyed being able to represent our school and Wales!”   Beth, also a learner from Year 6, added: “I liked that all schools were nice and cheered for us. We sang well and didn’t mess up on the dances.”

Cllr Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “To represent Wales in a national songwriting competition is a great achievement!  What a fantastic display of creativity!

“I would like to thank the staff involved in making this experience possible for the learners; helping them to make unforgettable memories with their peers, whilst raising their self-esteem and inspiring them.  Their participation in this competition illustrates how school isn’t just about what happens inside the classroom, but also what it can offer the pupils outside of the classroom too.

“I can’t wait to hear next year’s song!”
