Wales is set to play a significant role in the largest UK-wide pandemic response exercise this autumn, as part of efforts to enhance emergency preparedness and resilience. The announcement follows the publication of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry’s first module, which reviewed the nation’s readiness prior to the pandemic.

The Welsh Government has outlined a comprehensive plan to address the inquiry’s recommendations, highlighting the progress made in bolstering Wales’ emergency response capabilities.

First Minister Eluned Morgan emphasized the importance of learning from the pandemic to safeguard the future, saying:
“Our priority is to keep the people of Wales safe. We are committed to learning lessons from the pandemic and building on the existing foundations to ensure Wales is prepared for future emergencies. Over the past six months, we have worked with other devolved governments and the UK Government to carefully consider and begin implementing these important recommendations. We have taken action to improve our emergency response capabilities and will continue to build on this.”

A key component of the Welsh Government’s strategy is active participation in the upcoming UK-wide pandemic simulation. The exercise is designed to rigorously test the nation’s systems, plans, and procedures for handling potential future health crises.

To support this effort, a Wales Coordination Group will be established to oversee the planning and execution of the exercise. This group will include representatives from national and local organizations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to preparedness.

The initiative underscores Wales’ commitment to collaborating with other UK nations to strengthen collective resilience and readiness for future emergencies.
