Maternity and neonatal services will be returning to Princess of Wales Hospital over the coming weeks.

The temporary closure of maternity and neonatal units began in September last year to enable Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board to carry out essential maintenance work. In addition to this work, a large-scale estates project to replace the roof of the main body of the hospital is also ongoing. The improvement work to the maternity and neonatal units, and the roof over that area of the hospital, have now been completed and the service look forward to welcoming families back to the Princess of Wales Hospital.

The re-opening will be undertaken in a phased approach to help keep women and babies safe as services return to normal. The timescales for return are:

  • Week commencing 10 February: Neonatal services will re-open.
  • Week commencing 17 February: Maternity services will re-open as follows:-
  • Monday 17 February: Re-open at 9am for spontaneous labours.
  • Monday 17 February: Re-open at 12pm for planned inductions of labour.
  • Thursday 20 February: Re-open at 8am for elective caesarean sections.

If you have any concerns regarding your pregnancy; or have any reason to attend the hospital before the re-opening, contact Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board Maternity Priority Unit at Prince Charles Hospital on 07442 865989. The midwife receiving the call will provide clinical advice and direct you further if you require assessment or admission. From Monday 17 February, the contact telephone number for Princess of Wales Maternity Priority Unit is: 01656 753652.
