Leading UK adventure park operator and certified B Corp, Zip World, has announced an enhancement of its Deep Mine Tour, now featuring a range of exciting new interactive elements designed to enhance visitor experience.

The popular adventure has been a staple heritage attraction since the tour started in 1979, with Zip World set to breathe new life into it from Saturday April 5th.

The history of the mine dates back to 1846 when it was opened by John Whitehead Greaves, a successful quarry owner. At its peak in 1884, the quarry produced 23,788 tonnes of finished slate per year and employed 513 workers. It has since been a significant part of the local heritage, showcasing the industrial past of Blaenau Ffestiniog and offering visitors a unique glimpse into the rich history of mining.

Zip World’s Deep Mine Tour, which takes visitors to the depths of the Llechwedd caverns, provides an immersive 1.5-hour guided experience, starting with a 500ft descent via an underground cable railway. Guests will explore the mine’s tunnels and 10 incredible slate chambers, with new enhanced audio-visual elements added to bring the history of the mine to life.

New interactive elements have also been added, allowing visitors to engage with the history of mining in a hands-on way. Experiences include pushing the mining wagon on the underground tracks, using authentic Victorian mining tools on slate slabs, suspending from mining chains used for safety at height, and simulating a mine blast by pushing a ‘detonator’.

At the end of the tour, a brand-new light show and projections will transform the underground lake into a visual spectacle, and guests will hear the Farewell Song, recorded and sung by miners, in the Miners’ Caban.

Those visiting will also be able to “meet a miner” through a projection where a miner shares his story and experiences.

Brian Jones, who worked in the mine between 1974 and 1981 and is now a guide at the Zip World Llechwedd, said:

“It’s been fantastic to see how Zip World has regenerated the site over the years. The mine’s legacy is deeply ingrained in the history of the area, and it’s wonderful to see our past reimagined in such an engaging and educational way. It gives me a huge sense of pride that we’re able to continue sharing our stories with generations to come.”

Zip World CEO, Andrew Hudson, added:

“At Zip World, preserving Welsh heritage isn’t just a responsibility – it’s a passion that drives our innovation. The rich stories behind our flagship sites represent the cultural backbone of these historic regions, and we’re committed to being thoughtful custodians of this legacy.

“While we’re known for adventure experiences, we also want to connect visitors to authentic Welsh history by creating something truly extraordinary. The enhancements at Llechwedd transform historical education into a dynamic, hands-on journey where visitors don’t simply learn about slate mining – they experience the industry that shaped North Wales.

“These interactive elements ensure that the remarkable story of Welsh slate – now recognised with UNESCO World Heritage status – resonates with younger audiences while honouring the generations of miners who built these communities. By blending thrilling adventures with meaningful historical context, we’re creating experiences that entertain, educate, and inspire genuine connection to Wales’ industrial heritage.”
