Western Section of Tywi Valley Path Opens, Offering Scenic New Route for Walkers, Cyclists and Wheelchair Users

A major milestone has been reached in one of Carmarthenshire’s most anticipated infrastructure projects, as the western section of the Tywi Valley Path officially opened to the public today, Friday 11 April 2025.
Stretching approximately four miles from Abergwili to Nantgaredig, this new stretch of the path offers a safe, traffic-free route through the heart of one of Wales’ most picturesque landscapes. Open to walkers, wheelchair users, and cyclists, the route showcases the natural beauty of the Tywi Valley, winding through lush countryside and past historical landmarks.
“We’re delighted to officially open this western section of the Tywi Valley Path in time for the Easter holidays,” said Cllr Edward Thomas, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services.
“This first-class, traffic-free path offers families, day visitors, and tourists an unparalleled opportunity to experience the unique and breathtaking beauty of the Tywi Valley.”
“I am looking forward to opening the whole path, from Abergwili to Ffairfach later in the year. Once completed, the Tywi Valley Path will not only enhance the charm and access to our local towns and villages but also significantly boost tourism throughout the county, bringing significant economic benefits.”
The completed Tywi Valley Path will run a total of 16.7 miles, tracing a near-parallel route to the River Tywi from Llandeilo to Carmarthen. The fully developed path—expected to open by autumn/winter 2025—will connect visitors to popular sites including castles, country parks, historical estates, and attractions such as Aberglasney Gardens.
This landmark project has been made possible through a significant £16.7 million investment from the UK Government, with projections suggesting the path could generate around £4.4 million annually for the local economy. The Council is actively collaborating with leisure, hospitality, and tourism businesses to maximise the potential of this transformative route.
