Carchar Ruthin is celebrating a very busy start to the season with a brand new Escape from the Prison activity for the whole family.
Since 1654 the prisoners of this historic prison have been using their ingenuity and boldness to try to escape the grand walls of the prison (with widely varying levels of success!).
Now we are inviting visitors to follow in the footsteps of prisoners like Wrexham Bill and Ellen Warters to try and escape.
You have to find clues hidden in the basement of the iconic Pentonville cellar, keeping your cool to avoid Mr Parry the Warden; and in finding your way out you will also hear the stories of old prison residents.
Philippa Jones, Site Manager at Ruthin Prison, said:
“We wanted to create something new and exciting that brings history to life before our eyes in an entertaining way that involves the whole family.
The Escape from Prison activity is very popular and it’s great to watch the families immerse themselves in the history of the prison.”
As well as Escape from Prison, Ruthin Prison offers audio guided tours at the admission price providing a fascinating insight into the site’s history since the seventeenth century. Visitors can explore the original cells and see displays on crime and punishment over the ages.
The prison is open throughout the half-term holidays and invites visitors to discover the prison museum between 10:30am and 5pm (last entry at 4pm) every day except Tuesday when the prison is closed. In keeping with the commitment to inclusion, the prison extends a warm welcome to all, including four-legged friends.
