A third (33%) of the Welsh workforce reveal they have skived or would skive off work by calling in sick to enjoy the warm and sunny weather, according to new research from Turo, the peer-to-peer car sharing platform.
As the UK enters its hottest week of the year, Turo’s research reveals that Brits will go to great lengths to ensure they can enjoy the sun when it finally arrives.
Scottish workers lead the way with 43% saying they have called or would call in sick to enjoy the sun, with Wales below the UK average of 39%.
But we don’t all need to call in sick to enjoy the hot weather, one in ten (10%) Wales based employees said that they would be more likely to work from home if it was a sunny day. Of those that do work from home, 16% admitted that they have skived work for a short period of time throughout the day to get out and enjoy the sun.
The findings show that the hot weather also impacts the Welsh choice of vehicle, with two thirds (64%) saying they would actively avoid public transport fearing they would be too hot. Instead, 56% say they would ideally like to travel in a convertible car.
Of those surveyed in Wales, the most popular activity during a heatwave is spending time in the garden (48%), followed by going to the beach (29%) and visiting national parks or the countryside (28%).
Turo’s own data proves that Brits are used to making the most of the summer weather, with top summer filters being sunroofs and bike racks.
Turo is the world’s largest car sharing marketplace, offering Brits the choice of thousands of cars available to book from their phones, starting from £20* per day.
Xavier Collins, Vice President UK, Turo commented: “In the UK, the hot weather so rarely makes an appearance, that when it does, it’s no wonder people want to flock outside, At Turo, we see huge peaks in demand for cars during summer, and especially hot weather spells, whether it’s people choosing to avoid sweltering public transport or take a spontaneous family trip to the coast. With the cost of traditional car hire soaring, more and more people are turning to car sharing in the UK so they can make the most of the sunny weather without paying a premium.”
