Brave The Shave Raises More Than £10,000 for Parkinson’s UK Cymru

A head shave, an auction and an outpouring of community spirit have helped raise more than £10,000 for Parkinson’s UK Cymru, thanks to the efforts of Gareth Evans and his incredible supporters.
The event, held at the Maltsters Arms in Whitchurch, Cardiff, saw Gareth, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s seven years ago, along with relatives and friends brave the shave (and a round of waxing) in front of a packed crowd.
The family-friendly day featured a BBQ, face painting, raffle, and lots of generosity from the local community.
Gareth said: “I’m blown away by the support we’ve had. From those who supported the fun day and the auction, to everyone who donated and cheered us on, thank you!
“We might be without hair, but we’re full of gratitude. This was about raising money, yes, but also raising awareness. Together, we’ve done something really special.”
The event marked another chapter in Gareth’s tireless fundraising journey. Previously, he has taken on runs, rugby matches, quizzes and weight-loss challenges. But with physical activities becoming more difficult, he’s found a new way to make an impact.
Parkinson’s UK Cymru praised Gareth’s commitment and spirit.
Keri McKie, Community Fundraiser, said: “We are so grateful to Gareth and everyone who supported this fantastic event. Parkinson’s impacts around 8,300 people in Wales, and fundraisers like this provide vital support for people living with the condition. Gareth’s passion and positivity are truly inspiring.”
Maggie Barnett, landlady of The Maltsters Arms, added: “Whitchurch has always had a strong sense of community, and this was another example of people coming together to support one of their own. It was a brilliant day, emotional, uplifting, and a reminder of the power of kindness.”
The fundraisers included Maggie’s son, Seth, aged nine. Seth was also recognised by the charity for his fundraising on the day with a medal.
Funds raised will go towards life-changing research, support services, and campaigning efforts by Parkinson’s UK Cymru to improve the lives of those affected by the condition.
