Bridgend County Borough residents are being reminded that asbestos must be disposed of safely and correctly.

Asbestos is only accepted at a specialised skip at the Tythegston community recycling centre with a tipping permit from the council’s waste partners Kier. A charge will apply based on the amount of asbestos due to it being hazardous waste.

The Deputy Leader, Cllr Hywel Williams said: “It is important that residents dispose of this dangerous material in the correct way.

“If it is dropped into other skips at our community recycling centres it contaminates other waste and the skip has to be taken out of use until arrangements can be made to deal with the asbestos, inconveniencing other users.

“If you need to dispose of asbestos, please contact Kier to arrange a permit for disposal at Tythegston. If you are employing the services of a private contractor, the contractor is responsible for disposing of the asbestos in a safe way at a licensed facility.”

Kier can be contacted on 01656 643643 or by emailing recyclingandwaste@bridgend.gov.uk.

Recycling centres are currently open daily from 9am to 4pm for essential use only during the alert level four restrictions. Residents are asked to be aware that gates may shut up to 20 minutes early to accommodate cars already queuing on site.

Safety measures are in place and all rules on social distancing should be observed. There are likely to be queues due to limits on the number of people being allowed in at any one time.

Waste must be separated before arrival and staff are currently unable to help carry items from vehicles.
