British Heart Foundation Newport thanks Lloyds staff and appeals for volunteers
BHF Cymru is appealing to the local community to get involved and donate the gift of time by volunteering in the Newport shop on Commercial Street.
Head of BHF Cymru Rhodri Thomas visited the shop to thank members of Lloyds Banking Group Customer Service Team who took part in a volunteer day, meeting staff and regular volunteers who support the charity.
Lloyds Team manager Emma-Jane Giles said: “We decided to volunteer for the British Heart Foundation as it is a charity that is close to a lot of our team and has impacted our own families. The work they do is outstanding and meeting some of the other volunteers on the day made us realise how important and the difference it can make to give up just one day to help such a great cause.
“We were all worn out after the Manager Ana set us the task of sorting every single bag in readiness for the next delivery, but we did it and all felt very humbled and proud as we left. I would strongly urge anyone to just give a little of their time to make such a huge difference to the people that need it the most.”
Lloyds colleagues Michala Meadows and Melissa Clifford were among staff who joined Maggie Griffiths who has volunteered for the BHF for 27 years, and Debbie Mordue who has volunteered for 14 months.
Shop Manager Ana Vasques said: “The Lloyds staff were amazing, and we are so grateful for the help they gave us. We have some wonderful volunteers in Newport, but we always need more help to prepare the stock people generously donate to us.”
The BHF Newport is inviting nearby residents who may be looking for something new to try, to take on one of the fantastic volunteering roles available. As well as providing crucial support to the BHF, volunteering can also provide great work experience, boost your CV, increase wellbeing and provide a social network within the local community.
Rhodri Thomas said: “We’re asking those who can offer a few hours or possibly a couple of mornings or afternoons a week to come and join the team, meet people and learn some new skills. Volunteers can learn and develop a range of skills, from telephone and logistical administration and helping on the shop floor to sorting stock or even helping to research, photograph and list items for the BHF online shop. Behind the scenes there are also physical warehouse activities or specialist roles for those who want to channel their passion for books, vinyl records, fashion or electricals.”
Retail volunteer manager Sue Johnston said: “There are also volunteer stock collection drivers, stock generators and volunteer recruiters who get out and about in the local area. These roles can provide transferrable skills for job applications and help with boosting confidence, while also helping the BHF raise funds for lifesaving research.”
The charity is now urging the local community to support their nearest shop by taking up flexible volunteering opportunities, whether it’s a few shifts or a longer-term commitment.
