Butterfly Data Transforms MFL Mentoring Project’s Data Analysis, Saving Six Weeks Annually

Butterfly Data, a data management consultancy, has enhanced data analysis and reporting for the MFL Mentoring Project, an initiative funded by the Welsh Government and based at Cardiff University.
By introducing automated Power BI dashboards, Butterfly Data has saved the project an estimated six weeks of manual work annually, allowing researchers and educators to dedicate more time to improving language learning experiences for students across Wales.
The MFL Mentoring Project promotes multilingualism among 12- to 14-year-old students in over 60% of secondary schools across Wales, tracking student engagement through extensive surveying. Previously, analysing this data was a time-consuming, labour-intensive process, requiring manual aggregation and interpretation of thousands of survey responses.
Butterfly Data’s solution replaced static, manually produced reports with two dynamic, interactive PowerBI dashboards, tailored to the project’s needs:
- The first dashboard provides real-time analysis of over 36,000 learner survey responses collected over four academic years, offering detailed visualisations of trends, patterns, and key insights on students’ attitudes toward language learning.
- The second dashboard automates the creation of customised reports for each participating school, transforming what was previously a time-intensive manual task of compiling 45-slide PowerPoint presentations for every school into a fully automated process.
The automation of data analysis and reporting has delivered substantial operational efficiencies, eliminating repetitive manual work while enhancing the project’s ability to derive deeper insights from the data.
By leveraging advanced data visualisation and automation, Butterfly Data has not only reduced administrative burdens but also empowered educators and policymakers with real-time insights that support evidence-based decision-making.
“Butterfly Data have been a pleasure to work with, offering exceptional service and outcomes which will have immediate positive impact on Project delivery and Project users,” said Lucy Jenkins, Product Owner at the MFL Mentoring Project.
“The added value offered through this project will resonate for many years and will help inform our understanding of learner attitudes towards International Languages at a critical moment.”
As education continues to embrace data-driven strategies, Butterfly Data remains committed to helping institutions use technology to improve learning outcomes. The success of this collaboration demonstrates the transformative power of automation and visualisation in making education more efficient, insightful, and impactful.
