Leading Welsh charity City Hospice has relaunched an innovative fundraising campaign to support the day-to-day work of their 14 Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Originally introduced in 2019, the ‘Donate a Day’ campaign is inspired by a greater need for palliative care in the community. The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an even higher number of patients and their families requiring the charity’s support, with nursing staff continuing to provide vital care on the frontline.

City Hospice is Cardiff’s local hospice, looking after people with terminal and life limiting illnesses such as cancer, dementia, motor neurone disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in the capital, City Hospice provides care and compassion to 550 patients at any one time.

The ‘Donate a Day’ campaign encourages supporters to find new, fun ways of raising money individually or as part of a team to fund a day of nursing. £150 pays for a day of nursing care by a Clinical Nurse Specialist, making a big difference to the lives of patients and their families. The campaign is a great way for community groups and local businesses to support City Hospice too.

Supporters can choose a date that’s special to them, such as an anniversary or birthday, to sponsor a City Hospice nurse. The selected day will feature on the charity’s online calendar and social media to celebrate the care provided thanks to the donation.

Keen fundraisers who raise over the £150 target can donate multiple days of nursing care and the same date can be donated several times with each donation representing one of the nurses who make up the team of Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Liz Andrews, Chief Executive at City Hospice, said: “Our incredible nursing team provide vital care, ensuring that patients and their families have the chance to create special memories during difficult times.

“As the need for specialist palliative nursing increases, we hope to encourage people to join in with our ‘Donate a Day’ campaign to celebrate the lives and memories of their loved ones while funding a day of our City Hospice nurses’ time so we can continue to provide important care in the community.”

As well as medical support, nursing and end of life care, City Hospice also provides essential counselling and support services for the families of their patients. Their bereavement service has been extended to support anyone in Cardiff, Bridgend and southern parts of Rhondda Cynon Taf as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
