Cardiff Met Graduate Smashes £18k Kickstarter Target to Open Two New Coffee Bars Across the City

Cardiff Metropolitan University graduate Frances Lukins and her husband Dan have recently smashed their £18k Kickstarter target to open two new coffee bars in unique locations across Cardiff.

Established in King’s Road Yard in Pontcanna in 2015 by the husband and wife duo, Lufkin Coffee has been a hit with locals ever since.

The £18k funding, donated by over 400 supporters in just 1 month, will contribute towards the creation of a new coffee bar in the old rangers hut in Thompson’s Park, Canton, as well as premises in the old Natwest bank on Clare Road, Grangetown.

The Grangetown location will be the new home for the 10K coffee roasting machine as well as a ceramics store and hot-desking workspace. The site will distribute freshly roasted coffee to all three locations.

Frances studied ceramics at Cardiff Met and graduated in 2018. During her studies, she explored the relationship between ceramics, the ritual of coffee and the community. Her work explored the notion of layering and building a poetic material language that could help customers to become more centered and better enjoy the moment.

Speaking about the new venture, Frances said:

“I see the potential for three coffee bars in different communities serving as different elements of a whole, building up and layering upon our values of ritual, slowing down and space for creative flow.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have reached our fundraising target already – we’ve been overwhelmed by the response of the local community. With their help, we’ll be able to create two new spaces where people can use the excuse of coffee to become more centred in their everyday.”

Frances and Dan are hoping to open the Grangetown location in May, with the aim of then opening its doors in Thompson Park in July.
