A charity that supports Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has received a £1,000 donation from Amazon’s delivery station team in Newport.

Cardiff & Vale Health Charity manages more than 300 funds for equipment, research, treatment and patient care so that work and projects that are over and above NHS funding can go ahead.

The charity received the donation as part of the ‘Amazon In The Community’ programme, where the company supports the communities around its operating locations across the UK.

The donation from the Amazon team supported a project undertaken by Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s Arts for Health and Wellbeing team, in collaboration with the Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa Programme.

The Health Board has an ongoing commitment to support partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa by sharing skills, establishing positive and collaborative working relationships and helping to build stronger communities in Africa. Amazon’s donation contributed to providing training for nurses, doctors and laboratory staff assisting with the Children’s Cancer service in Sierra Leone.

Amazon’s Newport Delivery Station Manager, Nathan Milsom, said:

“We are really impressed by the commitment of Cardiff & Vale Health Charity to not just the community in Cardiff, but further afield. We are excited to have contributed to such a special project and look forward to visiting the exhibition about Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s work in Sierra Leone.”

Community donations is one of a number of ways in which Amazon is supporting communities across the UK during COVID-19.

Amazon has joined a coalition of companies, universities, and research institutions to boost testing capacity for COVID-19. Amazon’s logistics network, along with Royal Mail, will deliver test kits to critical workers and diagnostic sites set up around the UK.

Amazon is also providing free online STEM resources to students in lower-income communities to enable learning to continue during school closures and is working with charity partner Magic Breakfast to ensure they can continue to provide free breakfast provisions to children in disadvantaged areas.

Amazon Logistics is helping independent local delivery companies to grow their businesses and adds capacity and flexibility to Amazon’s delivery network to meet increasing customer demand.

Amazon has created over 50 permanent jobs at the delivery station in Newport and works with over a dozen independent delivery companies with hundreds of drivers to provide the fast and reliable delivery Amazon customers love and trust. Packages are shipped to the delivery station from Amazon fulfilment and sortation centres and loaded onto vehicles to get delivered to customers.
