As part of Care Home Open Week (16-22 June), residents, families and staff at Merton Place Care Home in Colwyn Bay were treated to a variety of fun and memorable activities.

On Monday, students from St David’s College choir headed over to perform their favourite choir melodies for the residents of Merton Place. Everyone was welcome to join in and enjoyed the connection with the choir members, who also gain a huge amount from their trips to meet the elderly residents.

Later in the week a selection of soft, shelled and scaly visitors paid a visit to Meron Place from Animal Encounters. The residents enjoyed meeting and petting the cute fluffy guinea pig, rabbit, tenrec, unusual tortoise and snakes, including stunning ‘Mango’, a 12-foot-long Reticulated python, the star of the show, who was held by some very brave residents.

These activities form part of the regular schedule of interesting events at Merton Place. They allow the residents to share moments of joy and learning, and enhance their enjoyment of day-to-day life, with experiences which suit their individual preferences and abilities.

Students from St David’s College choir visited Merton Place care home, to sing for the residents.

Valerie Smith, activities coordinator at Merton Place said: “Our residents are all so different, and this is something we celebrate here. Whether someone enjoys a lively group activity or some quieter moments, we make sure there’s something for everyone.”

Throughout the week, Merton Place opened its doors to welcome friends, family members, prospective residents and their caregivers. Visitors could enjoy the activities, take a tour of the facilities and were offered a chance to speak with staff about life at the home, care options, support choices, at nutrition. Helping to gain a full picture of the life which residents can expect.

Care Home Open week gives staff a chance to open the doors at Merton Place and demonstrate how compassionate, person-centred care is delivered. The staff are delighted to share the home with the wider community and show how they support residents to get the most out of each day.

One reviewer of Merton Place said: “My mum is the most precious thing to me and knowing that she is being taken care of is a godsend. Mum has been in Merton Place for nearly 7 years and I cannot praise the staff more for taking such good care of her and keeping in touch with the family. Putting family members in care homes is a difficult decision but having an excellent care home helps to diminish any worries.”

Another family member said: “The service and care that Mum gets is second to none. I know she is in good safe hands the food is always good. The staff are friendly and will always answer any questions.”
