You may have read some of our recent articles aimed at attracting shoppers back to our local high streets here in Denbighshire over the Christmas period. We hope all our residents had a wonderful Christmas and that our traders and businesses had a successful and prosperous one. But as 2023 begins, we should also remember that the local business which was there when we needed that last minute gift for ‘you know who’ which we’d forgotten to buy, could also do with our support during the other eleven months of the year.

January is a time for new year’s resolutions. Some of us might decide to eat a bit healthier, maybe cut down on the Shiraz, or promise to spend twenty minutes a day on the newly unwrapped exercise bike! So how about a new resolution for 2023, by deciding to do a bit more of our shopping on our local high street? You might decide to do more of your weekly shop there, or simply visit once a week for a cuppa with a friend and a look around. Leaving the car and walking down your local high street is so different to parking in a supermarket, filling up the trolley and going straight home. You never know, your favourite local shop might be there waiting for you and you never even knew it existed!

The Council is promoting its #lovelivelocal campaign by sharing social media assets with traders and encouraging them to shout about their businesses online. This can be an excellent way for traders to reach a wider audience and attract people to the high street. But what can be even better than an advert by the business itself is a good word from someone who has shopped locally and wants to share that experience with others. This helps in so many ways, by letting people know you’ve shopped local and encouraging them to do likewise. You can even tag the businesses themselves to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts.

Our local high streets are the heartbeat of our towns, and we can ensure that they continue to play an important role in our everyday lives. That twice-weekly loaf from the bakery, a Monday morning coffee, or that scarf you bought in the sales may not seem much on its own, but if we all decide to pop down the high street again we can make a huge difference.

Councillor Jason McLellan, Leader of Denbighshire County Council, and Lead Member for Economic Growth and Tackling Deprivation, said: the #lovelivelocal campaign has been great in the run up to Christmas, but it’s vitally important that we continue to support our local businesses and our town/village centres throughout the year, so why not make 2023 the year for Denbighshire towns and villages?!

And a very happy 2023 to you all!
