The transformation of Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion is set to advance, following a crucial £4 million funding boost from the Welsh Government. Approved by the Council on 12 March, this investment will propel the next stage of redevelopment for the iconic Grade II-listed building.

This funding forms part of a broader collaboration between the Council and Welsh Government, ensuring continued investment in Porthcawl’s regeneration. It also builds on the £18 million already secured from the UK Government following a successful bid by Bridgend County Borough Council and Awen Cultural Trust.

With this latest financial backing, the redevelopment project can progress to its next phase, including the approval process for the main construction contract. The final plans—shaped by extensive community input—focus on restoring and modernizing the Grand Pavilion while preserving its historic Art Deco features, such as the clock tower and stained-glass windows. The redevelopment will also introduce a glazed rooftop pavilion with stunning Bristol Channel views, improved accessibility with a passenger lift, and new auditorium and gallery spaces. Additionally, the original domed roof will undergo careful restoration, complete with insulation and the reinstatement of its distinctive marine-styled weathervane.

Councillor Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning, and Regeneration, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress:

“This funding marks a significant step forward in revitalizing the Grand Pavilion. With preliminary works completed, including the internal strip-out to assess structural needs, we are now in a strong position to move into the main construction phase. Thanks to our partnership with Welsh Government, we can push ahead with delivering a vibrant, history-rich venue that will benefit the community for years to come.”

Looking ahead, Awen Cultural Trust will focus on securing additional funds for the interior fit-out, ensuring the Grand Pavilion reopens as a high-quality cultural and arts hub.

Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, acknowledged the ambitious road ahead:

“We are committed to ensuring the Grand Pavilion is restored and upgraded to a standard that meets community expectations and serves future generations. While we have a significant fundraising target, we will work closely with the Council to achieve it. In the coming months, we will launch our fundraising campaigns and appreciate all the support we receive.”

During the redevelopment, Awen Cultural Trust continues to bring entertainment to the community through its ‘Pop-Up Pavilion’ events at Awel-y-Mor Community Centre and other local venues. These monthly events feature a mix of jazz, comedy nights, tea dances, cinema screenings, lunchtime theatre, and family-friendly performances.
