A leading Welsh innovator in healthcare technology is celebrating once again after its innovative non-invasive blood glucose monitoring device received a prestigious European accolade for the second time.

Afon Technology’s Glucowear™ has repeated its success in the European Product Design Awards, winning in the ‘Personal/Wellness and Beauty: Other Designs’ category thanks to the creative vision of designer Tom Craven.

This pioneering device was developed in collaboration with the specialist team at the Medical Design Group Ltd – a Cardiff-based consultancy known for excelling in the design and development of innovative medical devices.

Afon Technology is on a mission to revolutionise diabetes care with the creation of the world’s first truly non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring device.

Its groundbreaking product, Glucowear™, is designed to provide a needle-free experience for people living with diabetes — offering real-time blood sugar tracking without pain or disruption.

Sabih Chaudhry, Afon Technology’s CEO, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Glucowear™ has been recognised once again by the European Product Design Awards.

“This accolade is a powerful endorsement of the innovation, vision, and hard work that have gone into developing such a game-changing piece of technology.”

He added: “Our congratulations go to Tom Craven and the team at Medical Design Group, whose design expertise have been instrumental in bringing Glucowear™ to life.

“This award celebrates not just great design, but a shared mission to improve lives through pain-free, non-invasive glucose monitoring. We are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together – and even more excited for what lies ahead.”

Afon Technology has won a number of awards, recently picking up the Health and Safety Gold Award, highlighting the company’s outstanding dedication to health and safety excellence.

Unlike the current continuous glucose monitoring devices, Afon Technology’s sensor will measure blood glucose levels in real-time without the need to penetrate the skin at all, making it easier to manage the condition, reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and limb amputations.

Companies such as Apple, Samsung and Google are rumoured to have been trying to develop non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, but so far none have been successful. Afon Technology hopes to win the race to this important milestone.

Preliminary clinical research gives people with diabetes hope that such a device could become a reality in the near future.
