GlobalWelsh, Wales’ independent not-for-profit diaspora organisation, has facilitated its first deal via the GlobalWelsh Investor Portal, the first and only investment platform dedicated to driving Diaspora Direct Investment (DDI) into Wales and connecting entrepreneurs and investors within Wales’ global diaspora community.

London-based investors Jolie and Mike Powell have completed an equity investment in Health & Her, an award-winning FemTech start-up based in Cardiff specialising in women’s menopausal health.

Business consultant and angel investor, Jolie Powell, and her husband Mike Powell, a Cardiff-born airline entrepreneur and GlobalWelsh Founding Patron, first encountered Health & Her at the launch of the GlobalWelsh Investor Portal at the Gherkin in London on 1st July. Experienced investors and business people, the couple immediately saw that the ambitious entrepreneurs had recognised the business potential of a once overlooked consumer group. Jolie comments:

“Mike and I both have a passion for business, particularly for start-ups. The fact that Health & Her is based in Wales is an added bonus for us too. What we found particularly interesting were the ethics and authenticity behind the brand. As taboos are lifting there’s a lot of noise around women’s health, particularly in the menopause space. Health & Her helps women make sense of it all. Their unbiased, advice-led approach is refreshing and something that’s becoming increasingly important in today’s modern business landscape. We look forward to working closely with Kate and Gervase and helping them to grow and expand their fantastic business.”

Health & Her is an online platform focused on providing women with independent advice, knowledge, support and products to help them through the menopause and perimenopause. The company exceeded its original funding target and was 2.2 times over-subscribed, co-founder and marketing director at Health & Her, Kate Bache, who was born and raised in Abergavenny, explains:

“It’s vital for us we have the right team around us. Mike and Jolie have a vast collective experience as both investors and business people offering us an invaluable perspective and a breadth of knowledge for us to draw on. Although we were technically overfunded when we first met, we have a very ambitious product roadmap and this investment and support will enable us to exceed our targets.”

“I do believe that our mutual Welsh affinity gives us that extra something; it’s a commonality that’s both unique and rare. So, thank you to the team at GlobalWelsh for bringing us together.”

Launched in July, the online GlobalWelsh Investor Portal’s aim is to bring together the best investors and the most ambitious and innovative early-stage businesses both in Wales and those founded by GlobalWelsh members around the world. Walter May, founder and CEO of GlobalWelsh, concludes:

“This is a significant investment in an innovative Welsh tech start-up by experienced investors and international business people from within the Welsh diaspora. Put simply, this is why we’re here. To bring together people, opportunities and ideas who, without our input, may have never met. This deal and the growing number of investors and founders we have on the portal, is testament to the level of talent and success we have both inside and outside of Wales.”
