Halo Leisure’s Carers Respite Programme gives unpaid carers a well-deserved break & an opportunity to work out or wind down!

Social enterprise and charity organisation Halo Leisure is pleased to launch a Carers Respite Programme, thanks to SUPPORT received from Bridgend County Borough Council and Welsh Government via Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations.

The programme launches on 1st February 2022 and runs for six weeks, with sessions scheduled for Tuesdays from 2 pm – 4 pm at Bridgend Life Centre. It will provide an all important opportunity for unpaid carers to invest in their own health and wellbeing through the free use of the onsite holistic therapies in the Health Suite ( steam room, sauna, ice room and heated lounge beds) & Toning Suite, relaxation techniques via Eleventh House therapies and diet & nutrition advice via Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board. Crucially, replacement care will be provided by SEW Carers Trust, thereby allowing unpaid carers time away from commitments to enjoy the well-being activities.

Halo Leisure Active Communities Manager Ryan Statton said:

“We are delighted to offer the Carers Respite Programme knowing the valuable work that unpaid carers do day in day out. We see first hand how exhausted carers can be and in need of a break. This situation has been exacerbated by Covid-19, as the vast majority of unpaid carers have spent even more time caring for loved ones during the pandemic and regularly describe feeling drained and burned out with no-where to turn. Most respite is used by carers for shopping but we really want them to focus on their own health by enjoying their well earned break with wellbeing activities at Halo.

According to Carers UK figures, there are 370,000 unpaid carers in Wales. We hope that this programme goes some way to supporting these unsung heroes or heroines in our local community. We want to help unpaid carers care for themselves so they carry on doing the invaluable caring for others.”
