How Do I Install LED Lights in my Hot Tub?
Cost
You’re stepping into your hot tub on a cold night, feeling the steam on your face, the hydro jets running and the slowly changing color of the water, a truly euphoric experience.
Thankfully, installing LED lighting in your hot tub is a very easy task if you don’t fear a bit of basic electrical work! The biggest advantage of using LED over any other kind of lighting is the low voltage leading to low costs, LED lights typically run on 12V to 14V, paired with a cheap power supply and maybe an extension cable, you are good to go.
The initial installment and LED display unit costs are also falling as this system gets cheaper and more modern by the day, making halogen lights a thing of the past and even putting fiber optic lighting in a tough spot. LED lights are slimmer, take up less space, are just as bright, and don’t get nearly as hot as conventional lights. Another advantage is in the event of electrical shorting in the water, these low-power lights are much safer than traditional ones.
Requirements
- If you plan on building a hot tub, you will have to run the wiring through the tub so consider finding hot tubs for sale since these are easier to maintain and customize.
- When purchasing the light, go for a wire length, longer than you think you’ll need as more than enough is always better than not enough. You obviously need the lighting, anything upwards of 25W would be suitable for a generic hot tub however, you might want more than one or a stronger one depending on the size of your hot tub.
- An extension cord is not necessary depending on the size of your wire but it certainly helps keep everything away from the water.
- A power supply suitable for your LED lighting, keep in mind that you need to keep this in a dry place.
- Basic tools such as a Screwdriver, non-contact electrical tester, wire cutters, wire strippers, and electrical tape
- A drill to mount the niche (do research your hot tub in case there is some other way to install lighting in it)
Installing the LED Lighting
The first part of the process is obviously to cut all power to your hot tub. If you haven’t made the purchase yet, you can find great quality hot tubs for sale online. Take the size of the tub into account when purchasing the lighting.
If your hot tub does not have a drainage system, you’ll need to rent or purchase a pump to drain it out before you start this process because you do not want to be dealing with potentially live wires submerged in water. When choosing a spot for the installation, try not to go for the floor as you would be looking at the light as you step in the tub, go for a wall or the bottom step of the hot tub.
The actual installation is pretty simple; all you will need to do is drill a few holes to mount the light holder, often referred to as a niche. Next, connect the correct wires in the junction box of the light, insulate all the wires with electrical tape, fit the light into the niche and you’re done!
The power supply of the light should be kept in a dry spot so consider plugging it into an extension cord to further extend the wire away from water. Also, talk to someone at your local hardware store to find the right adapter for the job if you do not have enough knowledge on the matter.
If your light comes with a remote, ensure that it is waterproof or, keep it away from the hot tub, just to be safe. Remote controls aren’t really necessary though, because there is no reason to turn the lights on and off while you’re in the hot tub so if you want to save some cash, go for it.
Entertainment by the Hot Tub
For more additions to your backyard, consider an outdoor LED display panel by the hot tub. They’re great for daytime and nighttime entertainment, even by the tub since they are waterproof, dustproof, and anti-corrosion even in extreme weather. They can be seen in direct sunlight as well. As with LED lighting, LED display panels also use low power and are cheaper and easier to maintain as well as lightweight and easy to install.
Watching a movie or putting on some songs while you’re in the Jacuzzi is possible as the viewing angle with LED display panels is great and so is the lifespan. With the minimal strain on your eyes, you and your company will certainly feel relaxed, getting out of the hot tub.
