Local housebuilder, Barratt Developments South Wales,  donated a total of £6,000 to two charities working to prevent homelessness in Wales — Shelter Cymru and The Huggard Centre.

Around 9,000 people are homeless or living in temporary accommodation in Wales — including around 2,600 children*. And with the unsettled weather set to continue, Barratt is urging others to donate where they can too.

Shelter Cymru has received a donation of £3,000 from Barratt’s Community Fund and Winter Support Fund — offering donations to charities and organisations working to improve the quality of life of people living in the areas that Barratt builds in.

Upon receiving the donation, Neil Davies, South Wales Regional Fundraiser at Shelter Cymru, said: “Homelessness in Wales is a bigger problem than many may think — and this is being heightened by the cost-of-living crisis.

“People from all walks of life are facing the possibility of homelessness, so we are grateful for donations of all sizes — which will enable us to advise and support the people who need it most during this difficult time.”

Huggard, Wales’ leading centre for people who are homeless and sleeping rough, has also received a £3,000 donation from Barratt’s Community Fund.

It will be used to provide practical care — such as support to tackle the causes that lead to individuals losing their homes.

Ellen Bryant, Team Leader at Huggard, said: “The winter months can be especially tough, so any donations are greatly appreciated, and go a long way towards helping people that are experiencing homelessness.

“For those sleeping on the streets, we are sometimes considered family — and we want to provide more than just a place to stay. We are determined to continue making a difference to their lives, as we have done for over 30 years — something which is made possible thanks to donations like this one.”
