A local cycling team whose alumni includes Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, and Olympic Gold medallist Elinor Barker, have received a financial boost from Principality Building Society. The £1000 donation was made by the society’s Albany Road branch in Cardiff, and will help support the newly formed Junior Team who have a busy year ahead.

Ruth Thomas, Maindy Junior Racing Team Secretary said “The team are absolutely delighted with the generous donation from Principality Building Society. The funding from the Principality has been critical to supporting our riders to race at a national level – with sights on travelling and competing in Europe. As a club, we have a long tradition in supporting riders achieve success and it is exciting for our riders to remain training in Cardiff and Wales with the support of the Principality.”

Maindy Flyers Cycling Club has previously been dedicated to youth riders up to the age of 16 years. This has recently extended to include junior riders, up to the age of 18 years, who can now remain in the club, training and competing as Maindy Junior Racing Team. This progression to junior cycling catapults our riders into the next stage of competitive cycling with higher expectations and more demanding races.

Albany Road Branch Manager, Victoria Jones said, “At Principality Building Society, we’re passionate about supporting junior sports teams and are delighted to have been able to support the new Junior team at the Maindy Flyers. We appreciate it’s a tough time for community sport and are looking forward to hearing how the season goes for the team and its young stars as they continue their cycling careers.”
