Mold opticians organises week-long charity fundraiser to support business owner battling cancer

Specsavers Mold is hosting a week-long charity fundraiser to support one of its business owners, Keith Martin, who has been fighting oesophageal cancer since August 2022.

Last September, the High Street store marked 20 years in business, but due to Mr Martin’s diagnosis the team have delayed celebrations. Now, they hope to rally the community and raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.

This is not the first time Mr Martin has faced cancer. In 2003, just as the store was about to mark its first anniversary, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The week-long charity fundraiser begins this week [14 August 2023], and Specsavers Mold has planned a full lineup of events and activities for the community to enjoy, including a bake sale, 20-prize raffle, guess the name of the teddy, face painting, fancy dress and a 20-mile exercise bike challenge.

The week will conclude at a North-Wales wide charity football tournament at Deeside Leisure Centre on Sunday 20 August. Five Specsavers stores from across the North Wales region will come together for some friendly competition, with all players contributing a minimum of five pounds each to play.

Denise Roe, Specsavers Mold director and wife of Mr Martin, said: ‘Despite the setbacks, Keith’s resilience and determination has been an inspiration to both our team and the local community.

‘We’re hoping that this week-long charity fundraiser, tied in with our 20th anniversary celebrations, is not only an opportunity to raise funds for cancer research and patient care, but also a chance for us to come together as a community.’
