Drivers could be paying up to £335 more for insurance if they own one of the most popular family cars and live in Newport, according to new research by MoneySuperMarket.

The study by the UK’s leading price comparison site looked into data for insurance policies sold through the site for family cars. It shows that the Skoda Yeti has the cheapest average annual insurance price of £282, compared to £617 for a Volkswagen Golf, which has the most insurance enquiries of any car1.

The average cost to insure a family car is £472 across all hatchback and estate vehicles.

None of the makes and models with the cheapest policies are included in the top ten most popular family cars, suggesting insurance costs may not always be considered when buying a car.

The Tesla Model-X is the most expensive family car to insure nationwide, costing an average of £1,125 more per year than the Skoda Yeti at £1,407.

Around the country, those from Huddersfield and Leeds pay the highest policy prices for their family cars, with the ten most common vehicles in these areas averaging at £598. The cities are followed by Kirkwall (£593), Shrewsbury and Walsall (both £590).

Newport pay the highest policy prices in Wales with £577 on average, followed by Cardiff (£559) and Swansea (£534).

Dave Merrick, head of car insurance at MoneySuperMarket, commented: “If you’re looking to buy a new car, it is always worth pricing up the cost of insurance before committing to a purchase.

“Our data shows the most popular cars in each region aren’t necessarily the ones that have the best insurance premiums. In fact, it is often the opposite – the most popular cars tend to have significantly higher insurance costs.

“There are many factors to consider when choosing a family car and, in order to keep costs down and keep on top of your finances, shopping around will help you find the best deal.”
