A Swansea-based jeweller has seen his eyesight transformed by a cataract procedure, allowing him to continue designing and making jewellery from his workshop on Oxford Street. . Spencer Morgan, has been running the family-owned business, Spencer Morgan Jewellers, for over forty years, following a career as a Royal Navy lieutenant. He has been able to continue with the close working conditions required to create jewellery, since his successful operation in May.

Like many people in their 70’s, Spencer had noticed a deterioration in his eyesight which was affecting both his vision and the clarity of colours he could see. While he had thought that stronger glasses would rectify the situation, he was concerned that poor eyesight would prevent him from being able to carry out his passion of designing and making jewellery.

A routine eye examination detected cataracts in both eyes and after some consideration, Spencer opted to have them removed at HMT Sancta Maria Hospital in SA1. The operation involves removing the cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens implant.

Spencer comments: “The improvement in my eyesight has been unexpected and remarkable. My eyesight is incredibly important to me. Making jewellery requires precision and careful hand/eye coordination so strong eyesight is essential. I now have 20/20 vision and can drive without glasses so the procedure has been truly transformational. My experience at Sancta Maria was second to none and the team there looked after me very well. The whole process was really efficient and the new hospital is convenient, particularly for a businessman like myself who works in the city centre. They were really flexible to my needs and I would recommend Sancta to anyone.”

Cataract procedures are typically a day surgery procedure and usually takes around 20 minutes. Recovery is normally swift and you can return to normal activities within a few days post-surgery.

Geoff Bailey, hospital director as HMT Sancta Maria Hospital comments: “We’re so pleased that Spencer has seen such a dramatic change in his eyesight since having cataract surgery. Many people don’t realise the benefit of such a procedure but in Spencer’s case, it has given him many more years of carrying out a job that he’s passionate about.

“We have a dedicated Ophthalmology suite in our new hospital and two-day surgery units which provide a comfortable place for recovery following each procedure. The cataract procedure itself is relatively simple and we’re able to see large quantities of patients each week, offering no waiting times and excellent after care.”
