Playground spruced up thanks to £300 donation from homebuilder Bellway

Youngsters at Maesybryn Primary School in Llantwit Fardre will be able to have fun with games in the playground thanks to a donation from homebuilder Bellway.

The company, which is building new homes half a mile away at Coed Derw, off Llantrisant Road, has handed over £300 for the school to spend on marking the playground for games of netball and hopscotch and providing netball/basketball hoops.

The markings on the ground have faded over the years, making it hard for the pupils to play their usual games and some of the sports equipment needs to be replaced.

The school is in line for improvement works to be carried out within the next three to four years, but in the meantime the PTA is keen to bring some of the sport and play equipment up to scratch and that is the focus of its fundraising currently.

Miss Oldfield, Head of Juniors and Physical Education for Maesybryn Primary School, said: “Having this help to be able to purchase line marking for the yard is amazing. We currently use meter rulers with chalk sellotaped at the bottom to mark out the lines, so we’re in desperate need of new markings.

“Don’t underestimate the fun we have doing the lines ourselves, the kids enjoy it and make a game of it but it would save a lot of time, that they could use to enjoy sports. We are very grateful to Bellway for this donation.”

Lewis Gater, Sales Manager for Bellway Wales, said: “When we heard that the children at Maesybryn Primary School needed their playground to be spruced up a bit because the markings were faded out and they needed new hoops, we were pleased to help.

“The school is just half a mile from our Coed Derw development and we are committed to supporting and enhancing the local area as these new homes take shape. It may be that families who move into the development include youngsters who will be going to school there.

“Being fit and active is so important for children and they need the right facilities to make that happen. So, we hope this donation will be a real benefit to the pupils and the school and support the PTA in its aims.”

Bellway is building 95 new homes at Coed Derw, transforming a former brownfield site previously used by chemical and care product manufacturer Clariant, into a new residential community. Alongside the new homes, Bellway is providing a children’s play area and public open space.
