Prestigious Dark Skies award for Prosiect Nos Officer
Dark Sky Officer for the Prosiect Nos Dark Skies Partnership, Dani Robertson, has won a prestigious international award for her work to reduce light pollution.
Dani works on behalf of the Snowdonia National Park and the three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Wales (Ynys Môn, Pen Llŷn and the Clywdian Range and Dee Valley).
In November, Dani’s efforts to protect our dark skies by limiting light pollution were recognised by the International Dark-Sky Association during the 2022 ‘Under One Sky Conference’. Up to six awards are given yearly, with only one awarded on each continent.
Since it was established in 2019, the Prosiect Nos team has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the damage caused by light pollution and promote the virtues of darkness to the environment and residents’ well-being.
Dani has developed unique techniques to help local authorities and communities tackle light pollution. She targets significant light polluters in an area, offering them lighting solutions that are specific to their needs in order to improve the existing conditions.
She also regularly hosts stargazing and nature events to share her passion for the stars and raise awareness of Prosiect Nos’ ethos and values.
Dani’s work is helping to improve the quality of dark skies and she has been featured on BBC One as well as other media platforms, helping to raise awareness of this important issue.
Dark Sky Officer, Dani Robertson, said, “I am delighted to have received this award from the International Dark-Sky Association and I’m pleased that this important work is being recognized. Only 2% of people in the UK get to experience truly dark skies where they live, those of us lucky enough to live in these areas of North Wales are fortunate to be part of that 2%.”
Dani added, “With each year, darkness becomes harder and harder to find around the world. In Wales, we should be proud of our efforts to keep our skies dark, for human health, biodiversity, the climate and of course, to keep the stars shining for future generations.”
