Professor Sue Williams Leads KABEL Showcase: A Visionary Fusion of Art and Performance
A celebration of boundary-pushing collaboration between visual art and performance, led by the contributions of Professor Sue Williams from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) can be seen at the KABEL pop-up showcase at Swansea’s Mission Gallery from January 25.
The exhibition will run until February 8, and highlights Professor Williams’ pivotal role alongside the innovative work of KABEL, spearheaded by brothers Anthony and Kel Matsena.
Professor Williams, a highly respected visual artist and educator, is renowned for her thought-provoking and visually striking work. Her extensive experience working with choreographers and dancers has informed her distinctive approach, which seamlessly integrates visual art into the three-dimensional world of performance. As Fine Art: Studio, Site & Context Programme Manager at UWTSD, her commitment to expanding artistic practice is exemplified in her work with KABEL.
She said: “Having worked on collaborations with choreographers and dancers for many years I am very much looking forward to revisiting the wonderful potential created by the fusion of my work within a three-dimensional space, collaborating with Anthony and Kel of Matsena Productions. This work is the inception of the bigger picture taking place as a larger touring experience.
“My history of working with choreographers and dancers and allowing my work to expand into the 3-dimensional world has always been a crucial part of my practice. This offers me an opportunity to work with multi-media and to extend my visual language.
“I would like to thank the Mission Gallery for giving this collaboration ‘life’ and I look forward to working towards the bigger picture in KABEL.”
Anthony and Kel, both accomplished choreographers, writers, and directors, teamed up with Professor Sue Williams to influence the visual elements of Kabel. The collaborative effort expands further to include sound artist Beth Lewis, photographer Laurentina Miksys, videographer Alex Hermon and visual artist Melissa Rodrigues. Both Laurentina and Melissa have studied in Swansea college of Art UWTSD within their specialisms, including Melissa having been taught by Sue.
The inclusion of Professor Williams’ artistry and leadership has been integral to KABEL’s ability to bridge disciplines, offering audiences a truly dynamic and ambitious experience. Her work continues to inspire and elevate the collaborative process that defines KABEL.
