Public buildings turn purple to honour Queen Elizabeth II

Three prominent public buildings in Bridgend County Borough are being illuminated in purple to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Civic Offices in Angel Street, Bridgend, the clock tower of the landmark Maesteg Town Hall and the iconic Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl will join other prominent buildings across the UK that are being lit up at night as a mark of respect following the recent death of the late sovereign.

The three local landmarks are in the process of being illuminated and will remain so until the funeral takes place at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Monday 19 September. The occasion is also being marked by a national bank holiday on the 19th, and a national one minute’s silence which will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September.

As a result of the bank holiday, there will be no waste and recycling collections on Monday 19 September, and all collections will take place one day later than normal up to and including Saturday 24 September. Community recycling centres will remain closed on Monday 19 September.

Schools and council offices in Bridgend County Borough will be closed on Monday 19 September. Digital and online access to council services will remain available, including via the My Account service. As a sign of respect, flags at the Civic Offices will be flown at half-mast until the funeral has taken place.

Coychurch Crematorium will be observing the national day of mourning, and its grounds, cloisters and Book of Remembrance room will all be open for anyone wishing to visit a grave or a memorial. No cemetery funerals have been booked for Monday 19 September, and following discussions with families, any cremations that were planned for that day have been rescheduled.

Halo Leisure and Awen Cultural Trust have confirmed that leisure centres, swimming pools, libraries and venues such as the Grand Pavilion will be closed on Monday 19 September.

Floral tributes can be left underneath the flags outside the Civic Offices in Angel Street, Bridgend, but please remove any wrapping beforehand. The flowers will remain in place and will not be removed until after the funeral.
